Makoto Ofune was born in Japan in 1977. In 2000, he graduated from Kyoto University of Education, Department of Fine Art majoring in Japanese stile painting. In 2001, he completed the course of postgraduate research at his alma mater.
Ofune lived and worked in Paris during one year from 2016 as a part of the Overseas Study Program for upcoming Artists run by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. Currently lives and works in Shiga, Japan. Ofune combines traditional Japanese painting techniques with an abstract vocabulary, revealing his search for eternity and harmony. The colors used are created from an ancient method of pounding natural metal ore or gemstones – lapis lazuli, azurite etc – into powdered blue and other colors pigments. Mineral stones are frequently crushed and grounded by the artist to make powdered natural color pigments (iwa enogu), which are then affixed to the hemp Japanese paper using natural animal gelatin glue (nikawa). Ofune meticulously adds multiple layers of the pigments to achieve the desired color and own worldview. This process is remarkably laborious, and highlights the respect and appreciation that the artist gives to the natural materials from which his art is created. Ofune’s works transport viewers back into nature and weave art into the daily rituals of life, as it was intended in traditional Japanese art. By creating an atmosphere that invites meditation, he proposes that the viewer considers not only the pieces themselves, but also the space created by them.
