Portrait Shot
#3, 2009
It was probably when my 6-week boot camp training was about to come to an end. Some 2~300 new recruits were lined up at the training field to have their
portrait shots taken. When it was my turn after a long wait, the soldier with a camera started to shout at me, “Back straight! Hold up your chin!”
The soldier did not give me time to think but pressed the shutter anyway and yelled, “Next!”.
Utterly unprepared, the picture was taken instantly and during that short period of time I was so
nervous that my head was a blur for a while afterwards.
After the training was over, I was assigned as an army photographer. During their time in the army, soldiers are required to have their identification pictures taken on several occasions. Unlike pictures taken outside the military base, they are neither high quality nor natural. When a buck private is
assigned to the barrack, a top sergeant brings him to the photo department as if they are father and son. Top sergeants who are about to be discharged from the service too often visit the photo
department to take a picture with close peers.
In the army, pictures are taken with two or three soldiers standing next to each other to save films. After printing and trimming each soldier’s portrait in standard size, I collected left-over photo papers instead of throwing them away. I too took several portrait pictures with fellow comrades before being discharged from the service but I don’t remember their faces because they have been cut out from the pictures: identification with names but no faces only remains.
#3, 2009
In Korea, where military service is mandatory, serving his military duty is a rite of passage that most Korean young men must undergo in order to become an adult. Even though socially, fulfilling one's military duty is a given and considered an honor, on an individual level, the military
experience results in a kind of psychological trauma for most Korean men who have been to the military. They are forced to be apart from their family and loved ones and they must suddenly go through intense physical training in a harsh environment. This military experience is simultaneously the most crucial and the most coercive event in the lives of young Korean men.
#5, 2017
Over the years, I have been working on photographs of soldiers - stories about young Korean men (2002 ‒ A Private, 2004 Reserve, 2009 - Soldier ID Photo, 2011-12mm).
The fifth new series to be released this year consists of nude shots of young people who have shaved their heads ahead of their enlistment day. On the night before his enlistment day, the young man who has cut his long hair to only 12mm long faces the lens while naked in the studio.
This unfiltered image reveals a complexity of emotions derived from his personal life,
his background, and his anxiety that he feels about the future. When the image finally came out,
I discovered a reflection of a young boy, not a strong soldier.
In the army, soldiers are supplies without personalities. However, they are individuals who have twenty years of personal history and are worthy of respect. We should no longer lock them inside the frame of a soldier in a military uniform. Should we recognize and treat them as human beings regardless of how they look on the outside? They are soldiers fulfilling their military duty. But they are also citizens who must be equally protected by the country.
By expressing these young people`s nudity in my photos, I wanted to look at them as who they were, ordinary young Korean men, and not just as stereotypical soldiers wearing military uniforms and hats.
Soldier”
#5, 2017
