    展覧会内容

    ギャラリーヤマキファインアートではこのたび、「コレクション展／ルイ･カーヌ」を開催いたします。ルイ･カーヌ（Louis CANE, 1943-）は、1960年代末のフランスで起こった芸術動向「シュポール／シュルファス（支持体／表面）」に参加し、現在までフランスの現代美術を牽引し続ける美術家のひとりです。「通常、人が見ている絵画は絵の表面部分にすぎず、それは単に麻布に油絵具を塗った物体にすぎない。」という理論のもと、絵画の構造と絵の裏側を示すために、枠のないカンヴァスに同じパターンを繰り返し描く作品や、カンヴァスを切り開いて折りたたんだ作品などを発表しました。

    「シュポール／シュルファス」の活動が終息していく70年代中頃からは、ジョットからセザンヌ、モネなどの伝統的や抽象表現の絵画の構図に基づいて、色彩豊かな半抽象絵画を描き始めます。「色彩上の経験と人生における経験とを一つに凝縮することを探求」するという方法論は、その後のルイ・カーヌの絵画の一つの指針となっています。

    1994年には、「睡蓮とルイ・カーヌ」展（パリ、オランジュリー美術館）が開催され、印象派の画家クロード・モネの《睡蓮》の連作に触発された作品を発表しました。カーヌは、抽象絵画に向かう道を示したモネの革新的な表現を参照しながら、色彩を「存在」として認識するための方法を追求するなかで、それまで絵画では用いられてこなかった、アルミニウムやグラスファイバーの網に樹脂で彩色を施す作品によって、絵画の歴史に新たな可能性を提示しました。

    本展では、ギャラリーヤマキファインアートのコレクションより、《睡蓮》のその先に迫ろうとした革新的な作品をご紹介いたします。軽やかなみずみずしい色彩に託したカーヌ独自の思考の実践を、是非この機会にご高覧ください。

    Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Louis CANE (1943-, Born in Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, France) from our collection.

    Cane participated in an art movement, “Support/Surface” that took place in France at the end of the 1960s and continues to be one of the leading figures of contemporary art in France to the present day. He focuses on the surface of the canvas (=Surface) and the framework (=Support). Based on his theory, “What we generally see when we see pictures is no more than the surface of it which is just an object painted with oil on linen,” Cane started to produce works with canvases cut out in order to expose their structures and backsides.

    In the mid-1970s, when the “Support/Surface” movement came to an end, Cane started creating colorful semi-abstract paintings derived from compositions of traditional and abstract works by Giotto, Cézanne, Monet, and others. His methodology of “integrating the experience on color and the experience in life into one” became one of the guiding principles of Louis Cane’s subsequent paintings.

    In 1994, the exhibition “Waterlilies and Louis Cane” (Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris) featured his works inspired by impressionist painter Claude Monet’s waterlilies series. In his exploration of a method to recognize color as “existence,” referring to Monet’s innovative expression that showed the way toward abstraction, Cane presented new possibilities in the history of painting by applying colors with resin to aluminum and fiberglass nets, which had not been used as materials in painting before.

    This exhibition showcases Cane’s innovative works that go beyond water lilies from the Gallery Yamaki Fine Art collection. We hope you will enjoy viewing his unique practice conveyed in light, fresh colors.
