この展覧会は、スコット・ハンターによってキュレーションされた展覧会です。

カミラ・オスピナ・ガイタンは、女性の身体のセクシュアライゼーションとオブジェクト化に取り組んでおり、彫刻、インスタレーション、写真などのさまざまなメディアによってその表現は展開されています。

今回京都での展覧会を開催するにあたり、彼女は日本の歴史分析をおこないました。アニメ、マンガ、版画における女性の身体表現に関する研究です。

さらに、それは近代以前の日本の版画における女武者（女戦士）の表現と、今日のアニメやマンガの現代的な過度に性的に描かれた女性の表現との比較です。彼女にとって重要な事は、今日の女性表現に疑問を投げかけ、身体をコミュニケーションの一形態と見なすことができるメディアとして文化を考えることです。 “Visual Pleasure and Narrative”というタイトルは、この展覧会とアーティストの作品にとって重要な用語である「男性のまなざし」という用語を作成し、観客と作成者に同時に疑問を投げかける、ローラ・マルヴィのテキストに敬意を表しています。

As we know modern Japan is a dialogue between tradition and contemporary life. This project is a research on female body representation in anime, manga and Japanese prints. Furthermore, it is a comparison between Onna Musha’s (female warriors) representation in pre-modern Japanese prints with the contemporary hypersexualized female representation of today’s anime and manga. It’s a series of sculptures that represent the duality of the previously mentioned iconography and aesthetic, through delicate and translucent pieces.

The exhibition has an important Japanese historical analysis where symbols are used to depict the fluctuation between fragility and strength. For the artist, it is important to question today’s female representation and think of culture as a media where bodies can be thought of as a form of communication. The title Visual Pleasure and Narrative honors the text of Laura Mulvey who created the Male gaze term, an important term for this exhibition and the artist’s work while questioning the spectator and creator at the same time.

Biography:
Camila Ospina Gaitán is a Colombian artist. She was recently awarded The Great Britain Sasakawa Award (2023). In 2021, she graduated with merit of Contemporary Art Practice MFA at Edinburgh University. She studied in Bogotá at Javeriana University Visual Arts and in 2016 she was awarded with the LAP program scholarship from the Japanese government; Studying in Nagoya at Nazan University and in Tokyo at Sophia University. Her projects are developed by different media such as sculpture, installation, and photography, working concepts as identities through the aesthetics of the ordinary. Nowadays, she works with the sexualization and objectification of female bodies. She has exhibited in different cities such as Tokyo, Bogotá, Miami, and Edinburgh. Ospina Gaitan continues her impressive streak with her solo exhibition in Kyoto, Japan. Following her highly successful debut solo show, Thorn in the flesh, at Edinburgh in 2022, she is set to showcase her latest creation in Japan.
