    展覧会内容

    日本画は、やまと絵にまで遡れば、千年以上の歴史があるといわれています。もとは、中国大陸や朝鮮半島を経由して伝えられた技法、素材が歴史の変動を乗り越えて今日まで途絶えることなく千年以上も受け継がれてきた日本画は、世界に類を見ない長い伝統を誇る絵画様式です。そして、日本画は、鎖国により自らガラパゴス化した江戸時代の日本では、江戸後期までは外の影響を受けることなく独自の進化と発酵を遂げました。開国後幕末から明治にかけて開催されたロンドンやパリの万国博で浮世絵や琳派の表現は、ジャポニスムとして印象派やアールヌーヴォーの誕生を促す大きなインパクトを西洋美術のメインストリームに与えモネ、ゴッホ、ゴーギャン、クリムトといった多くの西洋画家に影響を与えました。
    日本画の魅力は絵の具の魅力、素材の面白さによるところが大きく、油絵とは違う非常に繊細で透明感のある雰囲気を醸し出す宝石のような顔料の輝きと煌き、柔らかな光を放つ画肌にあります。また、日本画は、日本の中で熟成、独自に発展した様式といえますが近年では、油彩画の影響を受け、絵具を厚く塗り重ねた表現や抽象的描画など、いわゆる伝統的な技法にとらわれない表現技法もみられるようになっています。2000年代中頃から日本画は、現代アートと交錯するようになり花鳥風月ではないカジュアルなものやサブカルな画題を取り入れるなど伝統的な日本画の手法を借りながら、現代アートの最先端を切り開くアーティストも現れ、日本画を基調とした作品は世界からも注目を集めるようになっています。
    本展では、この日本画の世界に光をあて、日本画の世界で美を追求するアーティスト9名を選出し、岩絵の具という画肌のなかに表現された日本画の無限の可能性を展観したいと思います。また、展示作品を通じ日本画というテーマで様々な技法とスタイルの中に映し出される心象世界をコンテンポラリーアートシーンの問題として捉え、日本の伝統的な技法や様式の上に育てられ、熟成発展した日本画という視覚芸術に今一度その価値を求め、日本画の王道的見地に立脚し次世代の日本画の可能性と方向性を探りたいと思います。

    Japanese paintings including Yamato paintings have more than a thousand years of history. The techniques used are originally from China and Korean Peninsula, and the materials used have not changed until now. This is what we call traditional painting. Japanese painting styles were not influenced by any other cultures or movement overseas because Japan was isolated from the rest of the world, had no trades or whatsoever from 17th century to 19th century. Following the Edo period and the era of seclusion, Japan participated in the world expositions of London and Paris. The Japanese paintings (Ukiyo-e and Rinpa) had much impact and influence on Western art and artists in Europe such as Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Klimt.

    The beauty of Japanese paintings is in the use of materials; the glow and the clarity of pigment stand out on the work of art and makes it appear as if soft light is emerging from the paintings. The unique atmosphere and aesthetics of Japanese paintings were nothing like Western oil paintings.

    Although Japanese paintings were not influenced by other cultures or movements, contemporary Japanese artworks definitely has the element of Western ways of approaching artwork such as the layering of paint and the abstraction of expressions. From the mid 2000,s artists combined traditional (the theme of flowers, birds, wind and the moon) with contemporary approaches to gain the attention of world art markets.

    This exhibition "Fantasy focuses on 9 selected artists who seek the aesthetics in the world of Japanese paintings, and the possibilities of Japanese paintings and the materials used. Moreover, we wish to show the the different approaches, techniques and styles of Japanese painting in contemporary art scenes and the significance of traditions, the modern Japanese art and their possibilities of it in the art world.
