赤井正人は今まで平面絵画を中心に制作・発表を続けて来ましたが、今回の個展では大小様々な黒い木彫作品を発表します。
赤井は、一旦彫り上げた木彫を大胆にも燃やし、作品表面を黒く炭化させ、その後さらに彫刻を施し、あるいは石を埋め込み、研磨を繰り返し完成させていきます。
のっそりと佇む黒い像は、あたかも深い吉野の山中に潜むと言われる鬼神や、獣道を徘徊する修験僧たちの姿を彷彿とさせます。
この機に赤井の彫刻群を是非ご高覧ください。

うつせのほ
私が生まれ今も生活している土地、紀伊山地には長い歴史や独自の文化、アニミズム的な民間信仰があります。
祖父から聞かされた昔話や民話。日々移ろう山の自然、気候、景色。修験者の祈祷が山にこだまし、護摩焚きの煤で燻された山中の洞窟が幼い頃の遊び場でした。
そんな記憶の風景が私の作品制作に大きく繋がっています。
これまで私は主に絵画を制作してきたのですが、紀伊の山々のうごめきをより強く表現するにはどうしたら良いかと考え、
ここ数年は身近にある素材「木」を用いて大型の作品を制作するようになりました。
自然にある素材と対峙するうちに、絵を描く中で着想を得たイメージを立体造形に変えてみてはどうかと考えたのです。
さらに今回独自の黒を表現するために、思い切って火を使ってみることにしました。
火は人間にとって大切な陽のエネルギーであり、かつ負のエネルギーでもあります。
木を彫り着彩し、燃やし、削り、また彫るといった工程を繰り返し、対話を重ねて山のうごめきを表現していきたいと思っています。
自然に身を任せることによって、物質が持つ内なる力、ものの本質を引き出せるのではないかと感じています。

Until now, Masato Akai has mainly produced and presented two-dimensional paintings, but for this exhibition, he will present black woodcarvings of various sizes.
Once carved, Akai boldly burns the carvings to carbonize the surface of the piece, then applies further carvings or embeds stones, and then repeatedly polishes to complete the work.
The black figures, standing quietly, are reminiscent of demons said to be lurking in the deep mountains of Yoshino, or of Shugendo monks wandering along the path of the beasts.

Utsuse no Ho
The land where I was born and still live, the Kii Mountains, has a long history, a unique culture and animistic folk beliefs. My grandfather told me old stories and folk tales. The nature, climate and scenery of the mountains change from day to day. The caves in the mountains, where the prayers of ascetics echoed in the mountains and the soot-smoked caves of goma burners were my playground when I was a child.
The scenery of these memories has been a big part of my work. Up to now I have been mainly producing paintings, but in the last few years I have been thinking about how to express the movement of the mountains of Kii more strongly, and I have started to produce large scale works of art using wood, a material that is close at hand. While confronting the natural material, I thought about transforming the images I got from painting into three-dimensional forms.
Furthermore, in order to express my unique black color, I decided to venture into the use of fire. Fire is both an important source of positive energy and negative energy for humans. I want to repeat the process of carving and painting the wood, burning it, and then carving it again, and express the movement of the mountain through repeated dialogue. I feel that by letting nature take its course, I am able to draw out the inner power of matter and the essence of things.
The title "Utsuse no Ho" is a coined word combining
Utsuse = depression, emptiness, and empty
Ho = fire, and female yin, cave.
