この度、KOKI ARTSでは濵口京子の日本初個展「Do Gods Travel Lightly?」を開催致します。本展は、2018年にニューヨークのSPRING/BREAK Art Showにて展示された様々な信仰の神々の形を象った氷を用いたインスタレーション "God of the Day” を中心に、新作のアナログ写真作品を組み合わせたインスタレーションとなります。
濵口は、人々の移住や物事の循環などについて関心があり、時間の変化や移動といった要素を作品に取り入れ制作を行っています。作品形態は写真、彫刻、インスタレーションなど多岐にわたり、普段見慣れている象徴的なイメージ・形を、抽象性を帯びたものへと巧妙に変化させていきます。
本展のタイトルである「Do Gods Travel Lightly?」は、日本語に訳せば「神々は身軽に旅をするか？」となり、人が帰属の象徴として捉えるような信仰の対象が軽やかに溶けて無くなりまた現れる、というような行程がひとつの旅であることを示唆しています。また「身軽な旅」という概念は、濵口自身が日本を離れニューヨークで生活するなかで、絶え間なく人々が訪れては去っていくその街の圧倒的な流動性からも着想を得ています。
濵口京子 (1989年生まれ) は、2015年に東京藝術大学先端藝術表現科を卒業、2017年に同修士課程を修了し、現在はニューヨークにて活動中。過去に安宅賞 (2013年)、平山郁夫賞 (2014年)、平成藝術賞 (2015年)、藝大アートプラザ大賞展優秀賞 (2015年) などを受賞。主な展示に、「Live in your world / Play in ours」(2019年、Compére Collective、ニューヨーク)、「Pardon Our Appearance!」(2018年、AsofNow Gallery、ニューヨーク)、「LOOP-N-PATH」(2018年、205 Hudson Gallery、ニューヨーク)、「IIAF」(2018年、St. Martin's Episcopal Church、ニューヨーク)、「Sanctuary」(2018年、Pfizer Building、ニューヨーク)、「SUPERHEATED」(2018年、SPRING/BREAK Art Show、ニューヨーク)、「SHOOT THE HELPER」(2018年、CONSTANCE、ニューヨーク)、「群馬青年ビエンナーレ2015」(2015年、群馬県立近代美術館、群馬)、「佐野ルネッサンス鋳金展」(2015年、佐野市文化会館、栃木)、「Traffic Site」(2015年、名古屋芸術大学、愛知)、「Delta展-可能性の手触り-」(2013年、BankART、神奈川) など。
KOKI ARTS is pleased to announce Do Gods Travel Lightly?, Kyoko Hamaguchi's first solo exhibition in Japan. This exhibition will showcase "God of the Day" as the main piece, an installation work which was exhibited at SPRING/BREAK Art Show (New York) in 2018, along with new analog photography works.
Hamaguchi, interested in the migration of people and the circulation of things, incorporates elements of time and movement in her work. By utilizing her daily experiences and society’s systems in her artwork, familiar images are deconstructed and become anomalous. Her work takes form in many different materials including photography, sculpture, and installation.
The title of the exhibition Do Gods Travel Lightly?, suggests that the objects of faith (symbols of belonging) melting away and reappearing can be interpreted as a form of journey. The concept of "traveling lightly" is inspired by the overwhelming fluidity of the city Hamaguchi has experienced in New York after leaving Japan.
KYOKO HAMAGUCHI (b.1989) received her BFA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2015, and is currently an MFA candidate at Hunter College. She is a recipient of the Geidai Art Plaza Award (2015), Heisei Art Award (2015), Ikuo Hirayama Award (2014), and the Ataka Award (2013). Exhibitions include "Live in your world / Play in ours" (Compére Collective, New York, 2019), "Pardon Our Appearance!"
