ラットホールギャラリーでは、2018年6月1日から9月2日まで、レイチェル・ハリソンの個展を開催いたします。レイチェル・ハリソン（1966年、ニューヨーク生まれ）は、美術史やポップカルチャーなど様々な事象を結びつけながら、多様な素材を軽やかに用いアッサンブラージュした立体作品で知られています。日本ではじめて彼女の作品が発表される機会となる本展では、7点の立体作品からなるシリーズ《Stud》が、新作の写真作品とともに発表されます。

ハリソンは近年、捻れた木材を探し求め、材木置き場に足繁く通い続けています。製材所でつくられる木材にはすべて、品質を示す「HD Prime」のような文字列のスタンプが押されています。しかし木材はコントロールすることが難しく、たとえば倉庫の棚に長期間寝かされていたり、極端に力を加えられたりした場合、捻れたり曲がったりするなど、規格や規準から外れてしまうことが避けられません。彼女はそうした、建物の構造物としては用をなさない捻れた木材を自身の立体作品の礎とし、それらをセメントでコーティングし多様な彩りをまとわせたうえで、直立させ作品をつくりあげています。

本展ではこうした立体作品とともに、彼女がアテネ、デルフィ、デロス島などの博物館でギリシャ彫刻を撮影した写真作品が展示されます。かつてグレコ＝ローマン様式の胸像を撮影した19 世紀の写真家たちのように、彼女の写真もまた、記録にも表現にも還元できない、物質性と色彩の調和をもたらしています。彼女が撮影した12 体の古代彫刻はみな、本来置かれていた環境（屋外や建築物）からは切り離されており、背景に写る色面がその事実を示すとともに、かつては鮮やかに彩られていたであろう表面もまた、失われてしまっていることが指し示されています。また、いくつかの彫刻は一部が削り取られているなど、意図的な力あるいは無常の時間が複合的に働いていることが明らかにされています。
なかでも顔部分が崩されているローマ女帝の彫刻は、特に目を引きます。この彫刻は現在、アテネ国立考古学博物館に所蔵されており、ある人物の存在した痕跡を歴史から完全に抹消する行為である「ダムナティオ・メモリアエ（記憶の破壊）」の実例として一般に知られています。

「私たちは過去を読み解こうとするとき、過去に多くを投影しがちです。ところがどういうわけか、これらの彫刻は私に現在のことを教えてもくれるのです」とハリソンは言います。これらの古代彫刻は、《Stud》の木材と同様、時間の影響を受けた物質です。
没落した文明や形の崩れたものと協働するハリソンの作品は、断片化した身体、切断された器官を想起することへと私たちを誘っているかのようです。
