この度、KOKI ARTSでは古川吉重「Collages from the 2000's」展を開催致します。本展では、古川吉重（1921-2008）の2000年代のコラージュを主に8点展示致します。
古川のアトリエでの制作活動は、油絵を描く時にみられたように、絵の具を厚塗りしてみたり質感を試みながら作品を創り上げていきました。そのため、画面に物を貼り付けるというコラージュの世界にも、自然に馴染んでいったようでした。古川はゴムや布を使った作品をすでに制作しているが、このコラージュの世界でもジーンズの布や紙きれ、ボタン、ホチキスなど彼の日常生活で身近に関わった物が散りばめられ、自由自在に画面に繰り広げられています。「きっと彼はそれらを愛おしく思っていたのだろう」と妻・真島明子は言います。本作品は異質の質感を生み出しており、私達はそれらの魅力を古川の目を通して、また独自の画面の構成力も加わることで、古川のおおらかな世界観を味わうことができるでしょう。
古川吉重（1921-2008）は、1943年に東京美術学校（現：東京芸術大学）を卒業し、終戦後、本格的に制作活動を開始しました。1949年に独立賞（独立美術協会）を受賞し、読売アンデパンダンなどで発表を続け、日本の画壇で活躍しました。その後、1963年にニューヨークに渡り、ニューヨークや日本のギャラリー、美術館等で発表を続けました。アメリカでの没後初個展はbeta pictoris gallery（2016年）にて開催された「Black Rubber Sheet」でした。古川吉重の個展は、KOKI ARTSでは没後3回目になります。埼玉県立近代美術館でも4/16まで「特集：古川吉重」が開催されています。
KOKI ARTS is pleased to present Yoshishige Furukawa's solo exhibition, Collages from the 2000's. This exhibition will showcase 8 collages in various sizes mostly from the 2000's by Yoshishige Furukawa (1921-2008).
Furukawa's studio practice consisted of painting with different thicknesses of paint, experimenting with the texture of the surfaces as he created his paintings. As a result, the act of sticking different materials onto pictures to create collages was a natural process for him. He had already created paintings using rubber and fabric, but his collages are comprised of everyday objects such as scraps of denim, paper, buttons, and staples, which are scattered about the surface. "He was probably attached to those materials," says his wife Akiko Mashima. These works create a distinct texture, and with Furukawa's original compositions, they enable the viewer to see through the eyes of Furukawa and experience the artist's unique easygoing nature.
YOSHISHIGE FURUKAWA (1921-2008) graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (present-day Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1943. Furukawa started his professional career as an artist after his return from WWII. He received the Dokuritsu Prize (granted by the Dokuritsu Art Association) in 1949, participated many times at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, and after much success in Japan, Furukawa moved to New York in 1963. Throughout his career, Furukawa's work was exhibited at galleries and institutions in New York and Japan. Furukawa's first posthumous solo exhibition in the US was Black Rubber Sheet at beta pictoris gallery (2016). This will be Yoshishige Furukawa's third posthumous solo exhibition at KOKI ARTS. Special Feature: Furukawa Yoshishige is currently being held at The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama until April 16.
