1950年フィラデルフィア生　ニューヨーク在住

大学卒業後2年間新聞社で働き、フリーランスの写真家として活動を始める。1978年より1980年までインド、ネパールをはじめアジア各国を長期に渡り取材、優れた作品を数多く発表した。
ソビエト侵攻直前のアフガニスタンの取材では、民族衣装を着て変装し、フィルムを服に縫いつけ国境を越え、取材を続けた。それらはアフガン紛争を捕らえた初めての写真として、世界中に発表された。1980年アフガニスタンの作品でロバート・キャパ賞を受賞。

1985年には、世界報道写真賞の４部門にて最優秀賞を受賞している。
1986年よりマグナムに参加し、現在は正会員になっている。
その後もイラン・イラク戦争、カンボジア、フィリピン、湾岸戦争、ユーゴスラビアなど世界中の様々な紛争を取材している。
近年ではアンコールワット、イエメンの他、スリランカ、インド独立50周年、ボンベイなど取材。
1988年「Monsoon」、2000年の「South Southeast」など、アジアをテーマにした写真集を数多く出している。2002年、17年前に撮影したアフガニスタンの少女を探し出し話題になった。
